Tom Cruise's mother Mary Lee Smith has died at the age of 80.
Ms Smith died peacefully in her sleep last week after battling unspecified health issues, according to reports.
The former special education teacher encouraged the Top Gun star's pursuit of acting and he has frequently credited her for inspiring him.
Ms Smith and Cruise were close. She was a theatre lover who never pursued her dreams and urged her son to try out for high school theatre productions.
A representative for Cruise, Amanda Lundberg, has confirmed Ms Smith's death to media, after it was initially reported by People.
A memorial service was held for Ms Smith at her local Church of Scientology over the weekend, which Cruise, 54, attended along with his three sisters - Lee Ann DeVette, Cass Mapother and Marian Henry, along with other family and friends.
