Kiwi rapper Scribe has announced he's going into rehab.

The 41-year-old posted a statement on Instagram on Sunday afternoon, saying his addictions are "a symptom not a choice for me due to dysfunction and abuse both physically and mentally since I was born".

"I've always believed in staying true to yourself and f**k what other people think," the 'Stand Up' singer wrote.

"I'm now embarking on the greatest and most hardest crusade ever. For the next three months I will be in a rehabilitation facility with no contact with the outside world, no phones, no computer.

"I will be back a better and stronger me to take this world by storm… The Crusader is coming… Back!"

Scribe found fame in the early 2000s, his debut single 'Stand Up' winning Single of the Year at the 2004 New Zealand Music Awards. In its flipside, 'Not Many', the rapper coined the catchphrase "not many, if any".

The double A-side spent 12 weeks at number one, helping drive sales of its parent album The Crusader, which sold tens of thousands of copies.

Scribe's early success didn't bring him peace, struggling with alcohol and gambling. He declared himself clean in 2011, after selling his many awards to fund his addictions.

He hasn't released an album since 2007.
