Sir Anthony Hopkins says all four of Michael Bay's Transformers movies are brilliant works of art, made by a "genius".
The Oscar-winning Remains of the Day star joins Mark Wahlberg and Josh Duhamel in Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth film in a franchise severely derided by most critics as absolutely terrible.
Hopkins reckons the reviews are wrong and all of the films - even Revenge of the Fallen and Age of Extinction - are masterpieces.
"[They are] terrific, they're created by a genius," Hopkins told Yahoo Movies.
"I thought, this guy is a genius. He really is. He's of the same ilk as [Steven] Spielberg, Oliver Stone and [Martin] Scorsese... brilliance... savants, really, they are. I mean, [Bay] is a savant."
Bay's Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) and Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) have collectively made nearly NZ$2 billion at the global box office.
On Rotten Tomatoes, however, they have a critical rating of 32 out of 100, with most reviews slamming them as brainless, obnoxious collections of loud noises and computer-generated-imagery.
Following The Last Knight's release this year, there could be another 14 sequels on the way, according to comments Bay recently made.
