Caitlyn Jenner has revealed that she underwent gender reassignment surgery at the start of the year, because she was "tired of tucking the damn thing in all the time".

Her new memoir The Secrets of My Life is due to be released later this month. Speculation has been rife over exactly which secrets will be revealed in the memoir, but this news is possibly going to be one of the biggest surprises.

Jenner first transitioned from male to female over two years ago, but has kept her decision over gender reassignment surgery a secret up until this point.

The reality television star received an NZ$5.5million advance for her book, which was written with the help of 'Friday Night Lights' author Buzz Bissinger.

Jenner writes in the book that she is frequently asked about her genitals by strangers.

"You want to know, so now you know. Which is why this is the first time, and the last time, I will ever speak of it," she says.

After undergoing the procedure, Jenner says she was excited to realise she would be living "authentically for the first time in my life'".

"I just want to have all the right parts. I am also tired of tucking the damn thing in all the time."

In male to female reassignment surgery, the testicles and penis are removed and the urethra shortened to create a functional vagina that can feel sensation.

The memoir and will be released in the US on April 25.
