The Joker didn't kill Heath Ledger, family claims

The family of Heath Ledger have denied his death was linked to his infamous role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

There has been speculation that Ledger's method acting contributed to his downward spiral - culminating in his death from a prescription drugs overdose in 2008.

They're rumours Ledger's friends and family are keen to put to rest.

At the Tribeca Film Festival following the premiere of the documentary I Am Heath Ledger, two of his sisters, Kate Ledger and Ashleigh Bell, and his friend, Matt Amato, spoke at a Q&A to clear any misconceptions.

"Everything that came to light about the Joker, we were all so confused," Kate Ledger said.

She and Bell also said the idea that her brother was depressed by the role was "so not true".

"I was really shocked, because that was him having fun," said Ledger.

"Every report was coming out that he was depressed and that [the role] was taking this toll on him, and we're going, honestly, it was the absolute opposite.

"It couldn't be more wrong. He had an amazing sense of humour, and I guess maybe only his family and friends knew that, but he was having fun. He wasn't depressed about the Joker!"

Amato, who worked as executive producer on the documentary, said he supported Kate Ledger's statements.

"I hope it's an antidote to a lot of the gossip that exists in the world. And there's some really terrible things about Heath out there," Amato said.

"I think everyone's life should be celebrated. Your life, your life, my life, everybody's life, should be celebrated. Heath is a celebrity and in the public eye, and I felt like some corrections needed to be made.

"But in terms of a film as a tribute, I think everybody deserves that. And I know Heath definitely felt that way about people."
