The first music video in a series of Elton John tracks remade as part of the Cannes film festival has been released online.
The 'I'm Still Standing' singer was joined at the Cinema Olympia by long-time lyric collaborator Bernie Taupin and filmmaker Spike Lee for the world premiere of The Cut.The trio discussed the project which reimagines Elton classics 'Rocket Man', 'Tiny Dancer' and 'Bennie and the Jets' in video.
Elton John's 1972 song 'Rocket Man' has been recast as a tale about a refugee separated from his family.
The concept was based on the story of Majid Adin, and his experience as an Iranian refugee traveling through England. This unique twist gives a heavier meaning to Taupin's legendary lyrics about a lost astronaut on a mission to Mars.
The other winners were a sci-fi-themed dance piece for 'Bennie and the Jets' by Jack Whiteley and Laura Brownhill and a live-action film shot on the streets of Los Angeles by Max Weiland for 'Tiny Dancer', Fairfax reports.
"No BS, these are my heroes," Spike Lee said of John and Taupin . "Born in Brooklyn, New York, listening to these guys' music. That's the truth."
Elton John said that Adin's story was a clear standout.
"Majid's story is so incredible that I just wanted him, and just "so incredible that I wanted do to something".
"What he's made the film into is his journey from Iran to Turkey to Greece to Calais to London, and he's made it into his whole journey."
Adin was present at the event in Cannes, but had only arrived the day before the event due to problems with his paperwork, a perhaps-inevitable result of his time as a refugee.
