Neil Finn defends Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus over Crowded House Manchester cover

Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus covering a Crowded House hit has been defended by Neil Finn after a slew of nasty comments online claimed the pair "butchered" the Kiwi hit.

'Don't Dream It's Over' was one of several emotional numbers that got much of the crowd singing along to it during the One Love Manchester charity concert.

Grande and Cyrus were applauded by many for their take on the song, although several comments - including many on the Newshub Facebook post - accused them of "ruining", "butchering" and even "murdering" it.

Crowded House founder Neil Finn, however, has nothing but goodwill for the cover and thanked the pop stars for performing it.

"So good you took our kid for a spin with the good people of One Love Manchester, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande. Thank you," he wrote in a tweet.

The three hour-plus One Love Manchester concert was broadcast live in over 50 countries and attracted an average of 11 million concurrent viewers on BBC One in the UK alone.

The British Red Cross says the event raised £10 million (NZ$18 million) for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.
