Sleep apnea, 'other factors' killed Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher died of sleep apnea and "other factors", a coroner has ruled, without pinpointing an exact cause of death.

The Star Wars heroine died on December 27, 2016, after suffering a heart attack while on a flight.

The coroner found evidence of past drug use, but it wasn't clear if they contributed to her early death.

The 60-year-old had recently completed filming for Star Wars: Episode XII - The Last Jedi.

Sleep apnea causes people to temporarily stop breathing while they sleep, for up to minutes at a time in extreme cases.

"We’re not enlightened. There’s nothing about this that is enlightening," her brother Todd Fisher said.

"I would tell you, from my perspective that there's certainly no news that Carrie did drugs."

Fisher wrote extensively about her drug use and battle with mental illness from a young age. She took medicine for the latter, which may have contributed to her death, said Todd Fisher.

"If you want to know what killed her, it’s all of it."

He doesn't blame doctors however, saying they were "doing their best to cure a mental disorder".

"Without her drugs, maybe she would have left long ago."

Fisher was buried with her mother Debbie Reynolds, who died just a day later.
