Aaron Carter has broken up with his girlfriend Madison Parker and taken to Twitter to candidly come out as bisexual.
The 29-year-old singer and younger brother of Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter says he is attracted to both men and women, and has been since his early teens.
Carter, who had high-profile relationships with Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff when he was younger, wrote an emotional letter to his fans and posted it online over the weekend.
"There's something I'd like to say that I feel is important for myself and my identity that has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life... I grew up in this entertainment industry at a very young age and when I was around 13 years old I started to find boys and girls attractive," he says.
"This doesn't bring me shame, just a weight and burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off me... There were years that went by that I thought about, but it wasn't until I was 17-years-old, after a few relationships with girls, I had an experience with a male that I had an attraction to who I also worked with and grew up with."
Carter's split from Parker was reportedly "amicable".
"Aaron and Madison love each other and respect one another dearly," Carter's rep said in a statement.
"It was a mutual decision and Aaron's personal statement released speaks for itself. Now back to the music."
In July, however, Carter told Entertainment Tonight he was planning to propose to Parker and indicated the couple were intending to have children together.
