The actor who first donned the Godzilla suit in the famous 1954 film has died aged 88.

Haruo Nakajima had his big break bringing the monster to life in its seminal debut. He continued to play the character for 12 more films over the next 18 years.

The suit, weighing 100 kilograms, helped Nakajima change the perception acting in a costume "isn't an acting job".

Nakajima prepared for the role by mimicking how animals moved, saying "Godzilla's style of walking came from an elephant" that he had observed in India.

It earned him the roles of other famous movie beasts, playing Rodan, Mothra and King Kong.

Dozens of Japanese and Hollywood movies have since been made featuring Godzilla, although most of the newer movies use computer graphics to create the monster.
