AM Show newsreader Amanda Gillies read a viewer's letter on-air on Monday morning that described her as a "arrogant, phoney cow."
Host Duncan Garner brought the letter to the show's attention to mark the start of Mental Health Week, with the show focusing on cyber-bullying.
It came as Garner announced he had decided to quit Twitter after being subjected to "abusive and violent" tweets following his weekend column about immigration.

"We get all sorts of feedback and some is lovely and some is nasty then you get the odd letter written to you," he says.
The anonymous handwritten letter was sent to Gillies, an experienced broadcaster, who took it in her stride.
The letter read:
Gillies,
We write to tell you to let you know that you are an arrogant phoney cow when talking or reading the news.
You've always got a silly grin in fact your mouth is like a piano and your big teeth are like piano keys, you're always butting in when other people are talking.
And also use other people's quotes and never saying your own.
That's why you are phoney and an imposter.
As for those other two wankers, Garner and Richardson.
Garner is always repeating himself, how many times does he repeat days to the election.
We counted six times in one show.
And Richardson that right-wing p***k should keep his f****n mouth shut.
The trio took the feedback lightly and even offered to respond to the letter - but its author didn't leave an address or contact detail.
