Halloween is fast approaching and if the excessive decorations in supermarkets are anything to go by, New Zealanders are really getting into the spirit of the freaky holiday.

As always, some new costumes are just the lowest of the low - so if you feel like showing everyone at your Halloween party that you're not a great person, these outfits could be the way to do it.

'Upside Down Honey'

This 'sexy' costume, available from various websites, has caused outrage online as it appears to sexualise a 12-year-old character from the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Although the branding doesn't explicitly refer to Stranger Things, it's unmistakenly based on Eleven, a child on the show. In one of the advertisements for the costume, the model is wearing a blonde wig, which the character dons to cover her shaved crop, has blood coming from her nose, and is carrying a waffle bag that makes reference to the character's favourite snacks. However, this costume features a shorter hemline and is styled with over-the-knee socks.

2. German Gestapo Officer

If you're looking to recreate Prince Harry's major mistake of 2005, 'All About Costumes' on UK Ebay is selling this German Gestapo Officer costume. It comes with a black military belt, a red arm band, an officers hat, boot covers and is available in one size for £44.99 (NZD$92.99). It seems to be predominantly aimed at male party-goers. In 2005, Prince Harry sparked international outrage he was photographed wearing a Nazi soldier's uniform with a red and black swastika armband and an army shirt at a friend's costume party.

3. Pregnant Kylie Jenner

If topical entertainment news inspires your costume of choice, Yandy, the site behind this Harry Potter lingerie collection is selling a 'Reality Star in the Making' costume which resembles a pregnant Kylie Jenner.

The model really completes the look with those lips and a selfie-ready iPhone. "Boost your show's ratings in this exclusive Reality Star in the Making costume featuring a white dress with a V-neckline, criss-cross spaghetti straps, a ruched and wrapped bodice and a faux pregnant belly with a tie back closure," the costume description reads.

4. Rape Victim

Sit down, because this entry in the DIY category of offensive costumes will really make you question humanity. Two Kansas teens dressed up as a representation of 'rape victims', Mic reports. They snapped themselves wearing ripped t-shirts with fake blood on them and fake injuries drawn on their bodies.

There is so much wrong with this costume choice it's difficult to know where to begin, but let's try. Firstly, the costume defies the fact that there's no one way for a sexual assault survivor to look or act. How you dress is irrelevant, as is whether you carry visible injuries after the fact. Often a person's appearance after an assault is used as a defence of the rapist to say it wasn't an attack, a mentality costumes these costumes contribute to. Absolutely the worst contender on the list.

5. Fake News

When Kellyanne Conway coined the phrase "alternative facts" after President Trump's inauguration, we didn't foresee ending up here. Another costume sold by Yandy, 'Fake News' consists of a short tank dress in a newspaper print. The word "fake" is emblazoned in red across the chest, turning Trump's attacks on the media into a sexy costume.

"Spread all the alternative facts in this exclusive Fake News costume," the description of the dress reads.
