In the iconic scene, Emma Thompson's character Karen cries alone in her bedroom listening to Joni Mitchell after she discovers her husband, played by the late Alan Rickman, bought a necklace for another woman.
Now prepare to be even sadder on your next watch as Thompson has revealed that to play that scene, she drew upon personal experience.
Speaking at a fundraising event for Tricycle Theatre in London on Sunday night (local time), Thompson spoke of her own experiences crying alone in her bedroom.
"That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it's something everyone's been through," she said.
"I knew what it was like to find a necklace that wasn't meant for me."
Thompson was referring to her marriage to British actor Kenneth Branagh, from 1989 to 1995.
Branagh had a very well-publicised affair with Helena Bonham Carter beginning in 1994, when they met on the set of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
"I had my heart very badly broken by Ken," Thompson added during the event. "So I knew what it was like to find the necklace that wasn't meant for me."
"Well it wasn't exactly that, but we've all been through it."
