Jay Hernandez is stepping into the shoes of Tom Selleck as Magnum PI in a reboot of the classic TV show, according to Variety.
The Hostel and Suicide Squad star will play Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator.
In the original, Selleck played a Vietnam veteran also named Thomas Magnum. He was a generally laid-back person, working out of a Hawaii mansion owned by a never-seen wealthy benefactor.
His moustache and Hawaiian shirts - always open enough to reveal a very hairy chest - formed an iconic look.
The Magnum PI reboot will be written and produced by Peter Lenkov, who is also behind the current reboots of Hawaii Five-O and MacGyver.
Justin Lin, of Fast and Furious fame, will direct the first episode and executive produce the series.
