US rapper Kanye West has been ridiculed on Twitter, after controversially stating that slavery is a choice during an interview.
"You hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years? That sound like a choice," he can be heard saying.
"Like, you was there for 400 years and it's all of y'all? It's like we're mentally in prison."
West was taken to task by TMZ reporter Van Lathan in the newsroom, who told him "while you are making music and being an artist and living a life that you've earned by being a genius, the rest of us in society have to deal with these threats in our lives".
"We have to deal with the marginalisation that has come from the 400 years of slavery that you said, for our people, was our choice.
"Frankly, I'm disappointed, I'm appalled and, brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something, to me, that's not real."
Now thousands of people on Twitter are hitting back at the rapper, using the hashtag #IfSlaveryWasAChoice.
People are using the hashtag to mock the absurdity of West's comments, posting scenarios that might have happened if it were actually true that slavery was "a choice".
