America's Got Talent judges scream in horror as husband and wife trapeze stunt goes wrong

A husband and wife competing on America's Got Talent left the judges screaming and their two-year-old son distressed after their daring stunt went wrong.

Mary and Tyce, a married trapeze team, performed a thrilling routine on high, completing death-defying stunts surrounded by fire.

Husband Tyce is legally blind in one eye, a trait he played up by blindfolding himself before attempting the final trick of the routine.

He hung upside down as his wife dropped from above him - but instead of catching her by the ankles, he lost his grip and she fell heavily to the ground.

"Oh God, he's going to blindfold himself, no!" former Spice Girl Mel B yelled from the judge's table moments before the accident.

The entire panel of judges then screamed in horror as Mary hit the ground head-first.

Cameras also cut to the couple's two-year-old son Jaxx, who was being held by Mary's mother. They both looked terrified as they watched from the audience.

After a tense wait, Mary stood up and signalled to the audience that she was unharmed. The couple embraced as they received a standing ovation from the crowd and judges.

Mary and Tyce then asked the judges if they could attempt the bold trick one more time, but the panel refused.

"This is not America's Got Perfection, it's America's Got Talent, nobody can do this," guest Judge Ken Jeong said.

Simon Cowell agreed, telling Mary, "you nearly broke your neck."

Despite the nearly fatal error, the judges unanimously agreed that the performance was "incredible."

The Utah contestants were brought to tears as they heard the news they had made it through to the competition's next round.

The new season of America's Got Talent launches in New Zealand on Three, starting August 4.
