Kim Kardashian has stepped in to defend Kylie Jenner, who has been receiving backlash after Forbes named her one of America's Richest Self-Made Women.

The financial magazine reported that mammoth sales from Kylie Cosmetics has Jenner on track to become the "world's youngest self-made billionaire."

Many commentators online took issue with the term 'self-made' being ascribed to Jenner because of her position as the youngest sibling in the massively wealthy Kardashian clan.

Much of her $900 million fortune was made from the popularity of the 'Kylie Lip Kits' and other make-up products, with the rest coming from reality TV shows and brand deals.

Now in an interview with Refinery29, Jenner's older half-sister Kim Kardashian has insisted the label is an accurate description for her family's wealth.

"I really didn't get it, because she is 'self-made' - we are all 'self-made,'" she said.

"What, because we came from a family that has had success? To me, that doesn't really make sense..."

Kardashian went on to claim that her parents didn't give their children handouts.

"Me, Kylie, not one [of the siblings] has ever depended on our parents for anything besides advice.

"We might have the opportunity, but I've seen it go the complete opposite way. Nobody works harder than my sisters and my mom."

Kardashian also commended Jenner for taking an "insecurity of hers and [figuring] out how to make a really successful business off of it," referring to her sister's headline-grabbing choice to get lip filler injections as a teen.

Jenner recently told fans on Instagram that she'd now "gotten rid" of the artificial filler after posting more natural-looking snaps.

According to Forbes, Jenner's net worth is now more than double that of her big sister's - Kardashian is reportedly worth around US$350 million.
