Gogglebox NZ narrator Sharyn Casey reacts to the scariest movie trailers of the year

A show that's all about watching other people watch TV may sound like a strange concept , but that's exactly what Gogglebox is all about - and it works.

The British reality TV show has had iterations all over the world, including Ireland, Australia, the US, and as of this Wednesday - Aotearoa.

But what is it about staring at strangers watching the tele at home that is so addictive? BAFTA-winning, even?

"It's basically people-watching from your living room," says Sharyn Casey, who will narrate the Kiwi version of the show.

"You get to go inside other people's houses, and they react to the same things that you've been reacting to.

"It's quite funny the things that they come out with and their opinions."

OK, I'm nosy, I'm constantly looking to have my opinions validated by others... I'm starting to get it!

"There are some really great characters on there that you're going to want to be best friends with, or go out with, or avoid," Sharyn says.

To really put the concept to the test, I thought it was best Sharyn and I scare the living daylights out of ourselves by reacting to some horrifyingly scary movie trailers.

"I'm going to have nightmares forever," Sharyn says before we hit play.

I decided not to tell her I'd already lined up a YouTube compilation of meercats to watch later tonight, the same thing I do any time I'm subjected to the mildest of frights.

Unfortunately, it turned out we weren't very good armchair critics; unable to form any clear opinions on the subject matter in between the shrieks of terror.

Fortunately, a whole host of Kiwis have been selected to spin their own, probably much less scream-y, yarns about what's on the box - starting this week.

Gogglebox NZ premieres Wednesday at 8.30pm on Three.
