Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has taken time out of her packed schedule in the US to meet with Oscar-winning actor Anne Hathaway.

Ms Hathaway, who is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, reportedly requested the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister.

"I'm very familiar with her work and very excited to have a chance to discuss mutual interest particularly around family policies and children's policies," Ms Ardern told media.

The Prime Minister continued that she was "pleased" that the Les Misérables star had "recognised the work New Zealand has done over successive number of years to lift the wellbeing of kids and families."

UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka also attended the meeting, sharing an image of the trio on Twitter.

"Paid-parental leave and recognising unpaid carework are important action items for gender equality," she captioned the photo.

The Prime Minister is in New York to take part in a series of United Nations events.
