Gemma McCaw opens up on birth plan while fronting for Mark Richardson on The AM Show

Gemma McCaw has opened up about her plans for when she has her first baby with her husband Richie McCaw.

McCaw announced she was pregnant in July on her instagram account with a picture of tiny baby shoes.

"Rich and I are very excited to announce that we are expecting our first baby later this year," she wrote in the caption.

Newsreader Amanda Gillies asked her if she was planning on emulating Julie Anne Genter's bike ride to hospital, but McCaw isn't keen.

"I could take the bike but I think I'll take the car just to be safe," she said. "Err on the side of caution."

McCaw also shared her feelings about Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern taking baby Neve to the United Nations during the show, saying Ms Ardern did what she had to.

"I think in some respects she had to take her family with her," McCaw said.

"So in terms of that it was what she needed to do at the time and I guess what she felt she needed to do, and was best during that time over there."
