Marlon Williams is winner of this year's Silver Scroll Award for his ballad 'Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore'.

The annual award acknowledges excellence in songwriting.

The Christchurch singer accepted his award at Auckland's Spark Arena on Thursday night.

Williams' song is a duet with fellow musician Aldous Harding about the pair's break-up.

"I'm proud of the song because it taught me something. I've never had a song do that for me," he told RNZ. "I've learned to cope with love and grief through my own writing process."

Also on Wednesday night, pop singer Jenny Morris was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The Kiwi music legend was acknowledged for her contribution to the New Zealand and Australian music industries.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern introduced her to the stage, sharing her memories of Ms Morris' four decade career.

Her 1991 hit 'Break in the Weather' was performed by LadyHawke.

Last year's Silver Scroll went to Ella Yelich O'Connor, Jack Antonoff and Joel Little for their song 'Green Light'.
