Videos on his Instagram account showcase other extreme sports stunts and he is said to have trained for months to pull off the wing walk.
"As Jon got further out onto the wing it caused the small Cessna to go into a downward spiral that the pilot couldn't correct," the musician's management told media.
"Jon held onto the wing until it was too late, and by the time he let go, he didn't have time to pull his chute.
"He impacted and died instantly."
The pilot landed safely after Jon's death.
Jon's friend Rory Bushfield added that he'd "planned for everything".
"It should have been straightforward. It's one of those things. We're not really sure what happened."
On Instagram, Rory posted a touching tribute, asking Jon to take care of another deceased friend in the afterlife.
Rory has also set up a GoFundMe campaign entitled 'The Jon James Project' that aims to raise US$2 million.
