Public records show Petty was charged with attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in 1995, when he was also 16.
According to TMZ, court records show that he served nearly four years for that crime, before being convicted of first-degree manslaughter in 2006. He was released from prison in 2013.
Minaj, who reportedly dated Petty in her teens, made the relationship Instagram official this week, posting several loved up snaps of the pair on holiday.
The 'Starships' rapper has disabled comments on many of her latest posts - however, she did address the backlash from her new relationship in reply to a fan that came to her defence on social media.
"He was 15, she was 16... in a relationship," she wrote of Petty's conviction, according to Cosmopolitan.
"But go awf, Internet. Y'all can't run my life. Y'all can't even run y'all own life. Thank you boo."
It's not the first time Minaj has sparked outrage for associating with men who have been convicted of sexual offences.
She frequently collaborates with fellow rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, who pleaded guilty to filming a 13-year-old child engaged in a sexual act with a grown man in 2015.
