Endgame viewer hospitalised for 'uncontrollable sobbing'

A 21-year-old woman in China's emotional reaction to Avengers: Endgame was so strong, she was reportedly taken to hospital with "uncontrollable sobbing".

The Marvel fan is said to have been short of breath and suffering numb hands and feet after the dramatic climax of the film hit her.

Chinanews.com reports she was diagnosed by doctors as being hyperventilated and recovered after being given oxygen.

Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame continues to break box office records around the world, including in New Zealand.

The Motion Picture Distributors' Association of NZ Inc (MPDA) has revealed the film pulled in a staggering NZ$7.9 million in Aotearoa cinemas at the end of Sunday.

That means it scored the biggest opening weekend of all time in New Zealand, after already claiming the biggest opening day record when it opened last Wednesday.

It's also already the country's highest-grossing film overall of 2019 so far.

To put the figure in perspective, critically acclaimed hit A Star is Born has been in New Zealand cinemas for 28 weeks, over which time it's pulled in NZ$5.8 million.

Internationally, Avengers: Endgame has hauled in US$1.2 billion so far, making it the 18th highest-grossing film ever.

Avatar is atop that list with a haul of US$2.8 billion - a total that could well be within Endgame's reach.
