The Newshub Live at 6pm presenter found himself in the bottom two alongside social media influencer William Waiirua, but ultimately lost out in the dance-off.
"I'm definitely disappointed, it was an amazing journey and a great thing to be a part of, but I guess I get my life back now," he told The AM Show on Tuesday morning.
"All the things that I wanted to try and achieve by doing this show, I think I've done. So I'm pretty happy."
McRoberts admitted his stint on the show had brought with it a lot of nerves, joking that hearing the theme music at the beginning of the interview had triggered "PTSD".
"People see you in a very vulnerable state, but that was part of it for me," he said.
Last year, McRoberts' co-host Samantha Hayes took out the mirror ball trophy and was crowned Dancing With The Stars NZ champion for 2018.
"The first phone call I got after the show was from Sam," McRoberts said.
"I think she was more gutted about me going out than I was!"
The veteran news reader and journalist said the standard of dancing ability amongst the celebrities was "phenomenal".
"I really like Laura [Daniel], I think she just has it all," he said of the comedian and Jono and Ben star.
"She's a great performer, she has multi-layers with her comedy and acting and she's got a great dance partner too in Shay."
McRoberts, who was up bright and early to MC a conference, said he intends to take off his dancing shoes for a couple of weeks, but would like to continue with it in future.
