According to TMZ, the rap legend's father - and namesake - suffered a heart attack at home in Indiana.
Mathers, who went by Bruce, did not have a relationship with his famous son, and was frequently the subject of Eminem lyrics that painted him in a very unfavourable light.
In 2001, Bruce reportedly told The Mirror he was looking to reconcile with Eminem, maintaining he wasn't interested in his son's money.
"I desperately want to meet my son and tell him that I love him," he reportedly said at the time.
A year later, Eminem released his track 'Cleaning Out My Closet,' in which he made his feelings about his long-lost dad crystal clear.
"My f****t father must have had his panties up in a bunch/'Cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye," he rapped.
"No I don't/On second thought I just f**king wished he would die."
Eminem has not publicly responded to the news.
