The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star sparked outrage after sharing videos of the event, complete with decorations and costumes inspired by the TV show set in a dystopian world of female oppression.
Jenner and friends donned the red robes and white bonnets worn by the female characters in the series, who are kept as sex slaves and routinely raped to produce offspring for infertile married couples.
The response to the 21-year-old's social media posts was swift and furious online, with commentators dubbing the move "tone deaf," "disturbing" and "highly inappropriate".
"Women's bodies get policed on a daily basis, some states are trying to ban abortion, yet Kylie Jenner thought a Handmaid's Tale theme party was a good idea," one Twitter user wrote.
"Kylie Jenner throwing her friend a Handmaid's Tale themed birthday party complete with robes, Gilead flags, 'Praised be' vodka and 'Under his eye' tequila is so tone deaf, at any time, but especially when women's rights and autonomy are particularly under attack," wrote another. "Disheartening."
"I literally have no idea how to even comprehend why she thought that would ever be a good idea someone please go over there and explain why that is so problematic because sis is very uninformed," one tweet read.
At the time of writing, Jenner has yet to publicly comment on the controversy. Earlier this year, an "over the top" birthday party for her one-year-old daughter Stormi drew ire for being "excessive".
The carnival-themed festivities included a carousel, a huge slide and a giant life-like inflatable likeness of the infant's face.
