James Wan is returning to his indie horror roots with his next movie, before he directs a sequel to Aquaman, which pulled in NZ$1.8 billion internationally.
The Saw filmmaker suggests his next film will be very bloody and made with practical gore effects rather than computer-generated imagery (CGI).

Wan's next project was reported on by Variety before he confirmed the news in a since-deleted Facebook post.
"There's been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I'll say is, I'm super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller," the post said, according to Bloody Disgusting.
"An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets."
He's reportedly working on the film with Ingrid Bisu, star of The Nun.
Wan, whose last horror film was 2016's The Conjuring 2, is also producing an upcoming Mortal Kombat movie.
