Newshub Live at 6pm presenter Mike McRoberts was revealed as the Orange Roughy on The Masked Singer NZ on Sunday night.
The veteran broadcaster was eliminated from the singing competition despite being one of the clear crowd favourites, with his rendition of 'Catching Feelings' by Drax Project ft Six60 prompting chants of "Roughy! Roughy!" from the crowd.
The celebrity guessing panel couldn't quite put their finger on McRoberts' identity, thinking he could be country singer Keith Urban, former All Black Glen Osborne, Shortland Street actor Robbie Magasiva or former The Bachelor star Zach Franich.
After McRoberts was unmasked, host Clinton Randell asked him: "Is there anything you can't do?" referring to the newsreader's stint on Dancing With The Stars NZ in 2019.
"Make the finals, apparently!" McRoberts joked.
Still, he insisted he thoroughly enjoyed being on the show, and "loved" his persona of the Orange Roughy - a character he wondered if he could merge with his real life.
"I think I might have to change my name to Mike McRoughy," he said.
Having never sung onstage before, McRoberts said he signed on to do the show "straight away" when he was asked.
"I love opportunities like this and like Dancing With The Stars - to get to do something different."
The Masked Singer NZ airs on Three on Sunday at 7pm and Monday at 7:30pm. Previous episodes can be viewed on ThreeNow.
