John Mayer appears to have addressed a Taylor Swift devotee who messaged him a death threat on social media, according to screenshots that have gone viral.
Swifties around the globe have been celebrating the release of Red (Taylor's Version), which saw the singer re-release her 2012 album with a 10-minute version of the song 'All Too Well', widely believed to be about her short-lived but emotionally turbulent relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal.
The frenzy around Gyllenhaal's possible mistreatment of Swift has led fans to refocus their anger on the actor all these years later, and that attention hasn't escaped some of the singer's other former loves, either.
In anticipation of a re-release of Swift's 2010 song 'Dear John', thought to be about her relationship with Mayer, one 15-year-old fan named Alondra seemingly messaged him: "F**k yourself you ugly bitch I hope you choke on something", adding "answer me bitch" before Mayer appeared to do just that.
"Hi Alondra, it's John," Mayer reportedly, per screenshots of the private messages.
"I've been getting so many messages like these the past couple of days. I decided to choose your message at random to reply to.
"You can feel free to screenshot, share in any way you like if you want. I'm not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?"
Alondra replied "OMG WHAT I don't want you to DIE," before sending a voice note and apologising to the 'Gravity' singer.
"It's okay. I wanted to understand," Mayer seemingly responded. "So it's a fun thing people are doing without taking into account that I might see it and be affected by it?"
Alondra told Mayer she thought "nobody really thought you would see it or answer since you are famous and don't interact with random people" and continued to apologise.
The images show Mayer telling the teen: "There was some healing here today!" before adding: "It's 100 percent okay. Go forth and live happy and healthy."
The legitimacy of the screenshots has not yet been verified.
