Rust movie crew member hospitalised for 'multiple surgeries' to save arm after spider bite

The Rust film set has been hit with another disaster that has seen a crew member hospitalised less than three weeks on from the fatal on-set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Jason Miller, a lamp operator and pipe rigger, was working to pack down the production of the Western movie when he was bitten by a venomous brown recluse spider.

According to a reportedly now deleted Just Giving page raising funds for Miller's medical costs, he began to experience severe symptoms within days, including necrosis of the arm and sepsis.

"He has been hospitalised and endured multiple surgeries each day as doctors do their best to stop the infection and try to save his arm from amputation," the blurb read, according to multiple media outlets.

"It will be a very long road to recovery for Jason if the medical team is able to save his arm.

"If under worse circumstances he loses his arm, this is a life-changing and devastating event for Jason and his family."

A spokesperson for Rust declined to provide any further information, stating: "We do not comment on individual members of the cast and crew's private matters."

The incident comes after actor Alec Baldwin accidentally killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza when a firearm he was rehearsing with reportedly discharged with a live bullet, despite the actor having been told it was a 'cold gun'.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing and gun control activist Baldwin has spoken publicly of his "heartbreak" over the tragedy.

Speaking to media, Baldwin said he thought it was unlikely production would ever resume on the movie.
