The Hollywood awards season is heating up and is as much a showdown between awards shows as it is between films.
The scandal-ridden Golden Globes announced its nominations on Tuesday, the same day the Critics Choice named theirs.
Both award ceremonies are also set for the same day, so the stars will have to pick a favourite.
This past year has been a tumultuous one for the Golden Globes, beset by diversity issues and a publicists' boycott with broadcast partner NBC pulling the plug on the 2022 ceremony.
"Now that the nominees have been announced, the question is will there be celebrities on-site at the Golden Globes," Variety reporter Angelique Jackson says.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association - the 100-strong body behind the Globes - has since introduced hasty reforms which have been met by a lukewarm response from the industry.
On Tuesday, the Golden Globes livestreamed their nominees, bringing the star power of the Dog of the Snoop variety to present and represent, the same day arch-rivals the Critics' Choice Association revealed their nominees.
Lesser-known internationally, Critics' Choice boasts a voting membership of well over 500 film critics globally, including Newshub entertainment editor Kate Rodger.
"The January 9 ceremony is on the same day as the Critics' Choice Awards, which moved into that time slot when NBC said they would not be airing the Golden Globes this year so it's going to be hard for people to be in two places at once," Jackson says.
Awards politics aside, one thing both voting bodies proved on Tuesday was that New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion may well be on the road to the Oscars.
Her critically acclaimed drama, The Power of the Dog - shot in New Zealand - is up for 10 Critics' Choice Awards and seven Golden Globes including best director and best film.
Campion also has screenplay nominations, with awards love dished out for her stellar cast.
Sci-fi masterpiece Dune also features strongly with 10 Critics' Choice nominations and three for the Globes alongside other big hitters Belfast, Licorice Pizza, West Side Story and Will Smith's King Richard.
Along with the big screen, the very best in television is celebrated. After its gobsmacking season 3 finale aired on Monday night, HBO show Succession goes into both awards nights with plenty on the table including acting nominations for Roy royalty, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong.
