Suzy Cato to make musical debut in Opera on the Harbour's show Carousel

Suzy Cato will take to the stage at the open-air event Opera on the Harbour in February, playing the role of Starkeeper in the musical Carousel

The beloved children's entertainer will make her musical debut in the show opening at Auckland's Wynyard Wharf on Valentine's weekend 2022, showing audiences a new side to her as a performer.

"I was delighted to be invited to join the amazing cast of Carousel as part of Opera on the Harbour for so many reasons," Cato told Newshub.

"Having grown up on Sunday afternoon musicals back in the day, I've always dreamt of a role in a musical.

"OK, I might not have specified that I also dreamt of having the singing ability for a singing role in a musical, but, this is a sign that if you dream hard enough, and then work to make those dreams a reality, your dreams do come true!"

Cato said the role was an "amazing opportunity" for her to be seen in a different light in a way her "young friends" wouldn't have seen her in before.

The event will be the first of its kind at the Auckland waterfront, providing performances from Aotearoa's operatic talent alongside household names in music and entertainment, along with food, beverages and fireworks to finish.

Former Dancing With The Stars NZ contestant Cato says audiences can expect a "carnival atmosphere", adding that there's "so much to celebrate" about live performances after such a challenging time for the entertainment and hospitality industries.

A self-described "big softy", Cato says she'll have "tissues tucked up her sleeve" during the song 'You'll Never Walk Alone', explaining it has a "special place" in her family's hearts.

Tickets for Opera on the Harbour are currently on sale, and the event will comply with all New Zealand Government COVID-19 guidelines.
