Disney has unveiled a new "progressive" look for Minnie Mouse, swapping her trademark red dress and yellow heels for a sustainable pantsuit designed by Stella McCartney.
Disneyland Paris announced the new outfit on Twitter in honour of its 30th anniversary, and in doing so infuriated some fans who felt the move was "woke pandering".
Minnie's new tuxedo is blue with navy blue polka dots, and the look is completed with a matching bow and black shoes.
Fashion designer Stella McCartney said in a statement she was "delighted" to be working with the "iconic" Minnie Mouse, as the pair "share the same values".
"I wanted Minnie to wear her very first pantsuit at Disneyland Paris, so I have designed one of my iconic costumes - a blue tuxedo - using responsibly sourced fabrics," she said.
"This new take on her signature polka dots makes Minnie Mouse a symbol of progress for a new generation," McCartney continued.
"What I love about Minnie is the fact that she embodies happiness, self-expression, and authenticity, and that she inspires people of all ages around the world. Plus, she has such great style."
The news prompted swift backlash on social media, with one Twitter user commenting: "Way to go Disney, you turned Minnie Mouse into Hillary Clinton."
"I was never a Disney mascot fan but WTF?" another tweet read. "A covert Hillary homage or just woke pandering run amok."
"More woke BS. The design's nice but we're talking about a character that is almost 100 years old," a third person said.
Conservative commentator Candace Owens also voiced her outrage, declaring Disney was "bored" and "trying to destroy the fabrics of our society pretending that there are issues."
"This is so everybody looks over here, look at Minnie Mouse, don't look at inflation. Look at Minnie Mouse, the world is going forward because we have got her in a pantsuit," Owens said on Fox News.
"Never mind that you can't get anything in the grocery store and you can't buy a piece of bacon unless you have got thirty dollars in your pocket, at least we are addressing the real problem which is Minnie Mouse."
Meanwhile, some Disney fans celebrated Minnie's transformation, pointing out its not the first time the character has been depicted wearing pants.
"Oh look, there's Minnie Mouse in pants," one Twitter user captioned a series of images of the famous cartoon.
"Somehow, not destroying the fabric of society. Just being an adorable cartoon mouse, as one does."
"The only way I’ll be upset about Minnie Mouse's new pants is if they don’t have real pockets," wrote another.
"Fox News is all up in arms about Minnie Mouse wearing a pantsuit but they're totally fine with Donald Duck and Pooh bear out there just swinging their dicks in the sun," a third joked.
As well as being a part of Disneyland Paris' 30th anniversary celebrations, Minnie is also set to sport her new pant suit for Women's History Month in March.
