Golden Globes 2022: Dame Jane Campion wins Best Director for The Power of the Dog

New Zealand filmmaker Dame Jane Campion has won the award for Best Director at the Golden Globes 2022.

Her acclaimed western The Power of the Dog also won the biggest award of the night - Best Picture (Drama) after earning a total of seven nominations.

Kodi Smit-McPhee won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in the film, while co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst were also nominated for their performances in the flick, but didn't win.

Dame Jane also lost the Best Screenplay award for her script, which she adapted from Thomas Savage's 1967 book of the same name.

The Power of the Dog was filmed in Central Otago and has generated significant Oscar buzz. Dame Jane picked up the award for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival last year and was awarded the 13th Prix Lumière, one of French cinema's top honours.

This year's Golden Globe awards look markedly different than previously. The ceremony was not televised after NBC dropped the broadcast following Hollywood backlash over diversity and ethics issues within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Dame Jane previously won an Oscar for Best Writing on The Piano, her acclaimed 1993 film. She was also nominated in a writing category at the 1994 Golden Globes, but lost to Steven Zaillian for Schindler's List.
