New Zealand actor Antony Starr has been given a suspended sentence of one year in prison after admitting to drunkenly assaulting a man in Spain.

The Outrageous Fortune and The Boys star also has to pay his victim compensation of around NZ$8130 within three days to avoid time behind bars.

Starr, 46, is in Spain while reportedly working on a new film with Snatch filmmaker Guy Ritchie. He was convicted of wounding at an Alicante court on Thursday (local time) after the incident took place in Costa Blanca in the early hours of Wednesday (local time).

He was arrested outside the pub with the 21-year-old victim telling police he had been punched twice before having a glass smashed in his face. He reportedly had four stitches administered to a head injury after being hospitalised.

According to the Daily Mail, a court official released the following statement: "A speedy trial ended up taking place and Alicante Court of Investigation Number Nine, acting as a duty court, sentenced the arrested man to 12 months in prison and the payment of a fine of £4141 for a crime of wounding.

"The detainee's state of drunkenness was taken into account as an extenuating factor. The sentence was the result of an agreement between the state prosecution service and the man who was subsequently convicted.

"His prison sentence is being suspended on the condition that he doesn't commit another crime in two years and pays the compensation in the next 72 hours."

Starr is said to have worn a face mask and a hoodie with the hood up in court before leaving in a taxi.
