Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin could face up to 50 years in prison after he was accused of committing domestic violence against his 21-year-old nephew, who he was allegedly in an incestual relationship with.
A complaint against the 50-year-old Latin pop star was made anonymously under the Domestic Abuse Prevention Act, which prompted Martin's brother to come forward after and say the complaint was for the artist's nephew Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, Marca reported.
The 'Livin' la Vida Loca' singer was reportedly in a relationship with his nephew for seven months and when the 21-year-old ended it, Martin did not take it well.
Yahoo News reported Martin would constantly try to contact his nephew and loitered outside his home.
Sanchez also reportedly said Martin was both physically and psychologically abusive towards him during their relationship.
Earlier in July, the singer tweeted out a statement that claimed the allegations were false.
"The protection order entered against me is based on completely false allegations, so I will respond through the judicial process with the facts and the dignity that characterize me.
"Because it is an ongoing legal matter, I cannot make detailed statements at this time. I am grateful for the countless messages of solidarity, and I receive them with all my heart," Martin tweeted.
Representatives for the Latin singer told PEOPLE: "We are very confident that when the true facts come out in this matter our client Ricky Martin will be fully vindicated."
Under Puerto Rican law, allegations of incest are taken very seriously. The artist could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison if proven guilty, Yahoo News reported.
The legal battle is set to begin on July 21.
