Riverdale and Diary of a Wimpy Kid actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of his mother in 2020.
Grantham, 24, was last week sentenced in Vancouver - and will not be eligible for parole for 14 years. In the Canadian justice system second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence, the Los Angeles Times reports.
In court, details of Grantham's actions were heard, where he shot his 64-year-old mother in the back of the head while she played the piano on March 31 2020.
In a video recorded by Grantham, the 24-year-old confessed to the murder and showed his mother's dead body.
The LA Times reports the day after killing his mother, he filled his car with three guns, ammunition, 12 Molotov cocktails and camping supplies with the intent of killing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Instead, he turned himself in to the Vancouver police.
Psychiatric reports shown in court showed the actor expressed suicidal thoughts, along with feelings of self-hatred and guilt after murdering his mother.
The 24-year-old also battled with depression in the months leading up to the murder and he killed his mother to spare her from seeing the violence that he planned.
"I cannot explain or justify my action. I have no excuse," he said on the final day of his sentencing in June.
"It hurts me to think about how badly I've wasted my life… In the face of something so horrible, saying sorry seems so pointless. But from every fibre of my being, I'm sorry."
His sister Lisa found their mother's body on April 1. She testified in court and said her brother is a "dangerous person" and she feared his release from jail.
She claimed her life and career had been ruined by the killing of her mother, who at the time had cancer and was her best friend.
"It breaks my heart she struggled so hard… only to be murdered by her own son," she said.
"She was vulnerable and Ryan gave her no chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he was a danger to her life."
