Photos of Jason Momoa being welcomed to Hoani Waititi Marae in West Auckland have been shared online.
The Game of Thrones and Aquaman star is in New Zealand for production on Apple TV Plus series Yenedakine (Chief of War), which is based on the true story of a warrior chief caught up in the colonisation of Hawaii in the late 1700s.
An Instagram account dedicated to New Zealand actor Cliff Curtis also shared photos of Momoa performing a hongi at the marae and receiving a haka.
"Me and Jason were at Hoani Waititi Marae with Tanapaparoa," the caption of the the hongi pic reads.
Other photos were shared on a Glen Eden community Facebook group showing Momoa seated while observing another part of the ceremony.
Josephine Bartley, councillor for Maungakiekie Tamaki, posted a smiling selfie with Momoa on her Facebook and Twitter accounts.
"I got to fa'aula Jason Momoa (Samoan for putting necklace on him) to welcome him and acknowledge the importance of his presence and thanked him for bringing his film production to Tāmaki Makaurau. We appreciate it as a city," Bartley captioned the photo.
Momoa travelled to New Zealand last year to work on Yenedakine and in September shared photos of his meeting with some All Blacks, which he said "blew my mind".
In 2018, he told Newshub's Kate Rodger that Aotearoa is his ancestral and spiritual home.
"The Momoa lineage goes back nine generations in Hawaii but we actually found out we came from Aotearoa - which means we left Hawaii, went down to Aotearoa and then back. That's my line," Momoa said.
"When I was a baby I saw pictures of New Zealand. I've been just pulled there and the moment I set foot there it was the only place on Earth I've felt that this is exactly where I'm from - not even Hawaii has done that for me - I'm so connected to Aotearoa, on a higher level. I know I'm from there."
