Britney Spears' ex-husband says he is deeply concerned the mother of his two children is hooked on crystal meth.
In a column published in various media outlets filmmaker Daphne Barak, who has made a new documentary on the troubled singer, says her former husband Kevin Federline and other members of her family fear Spears is taking drugs again.
Barak says in the Daily Mail she spent nine months with the family of Spears, including her parents, brother and Federline.
She says Federline and her family are concerned Spears will meet the same fate as Amy Winehouse, the Daily Mail reports.
"I fear she's on meth – I've been praying someone would make it public and that she wakes up," Federline told Barak.
"Every time the telephone rings, I fear that there will be devastating news.
"I don't want the boys to wake up one morning and find their mother has taken an overdose."
The Sun reported both of Spears' sons Preston, 17, and Jayden, 16, say they saw someone bringing what looked like drugs to their mother's house. Both are refusing to see her until she cleans up her act.
Spears has had reported issues with drugs in the past. In 2019 she checked into a rehab clinic saying she needed some time out.
In 2019 former X-Factor judge Louis Walsh said Spears was often out of it during the filming of the show in 2012.
In an interview with The Irish Times, Walsh said he "felt sorry" for the pop star during his brief stint judging the talent show alongside her, saying "she wasn't there mentally".
"I was sitting with Britney for two days and after every few auditions she would go..." he said, slumping over to demonstrate her collapse.
"They would literally have to stop the show and take her out because she was on so much medication and other stuff. I felt sorry for her."
In 2021 a worse-for-where-looking Spears posted a video of herself on Instagram reassuring fans she was ok.
Towards the end of the video, she reveals the "next question is, am I ok?" - a question fans have been dying to hear the answer to since the documentary Framing Britney Spears exposed the ins and outs of the conservatorship she is locked into.
"Yes, I'm totally fine," she responds.
"I'm extremely happy, I have a beautiful home, beautiful children, um, I'm taking a break right now because, um, I'm enjoying myself."
