Review: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is full of high-octane thrills and spills

Mad Max fans are revving their engines as the next chapter of this action-packed dystopian franchise blasts into cinemas next week.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga tells the origin story of Furiosa, and Newshub's entertainment editor got behind the wheel to check it out.

There's a new Mad Max roaring into town and Furiosa is locked and loaded, ready to huff and to puff and to tear this house down.

In 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron's Furiosa is a warrior queen for the ages and her origin story was begging to be told - and Australian filmmaker George Miller has done just that.

Miller has some help, enlisting as his Furiosa is Anya Taylor Joy, alongside her younger self in a stunning break-out big screen performance from young Alyla Browne as little Furiosa.

And of course Chris Hemsworth played the aptly named Dementus.

It's a lot. And from the get-go, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was less linear in the storytelling than its lean and mean predecessor, with exposition and what feels like more of everything.

Are you a fan of Mad Max:Fury Road's war rig? Well, does Dr George have a treat in store for you.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a five-star one-way highway to the action film Hall of Fame, while Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a multi-lane super-highway full of the same high-octane thrills and spills but with an over-powered engine that stalls here and there, not quite taking the same chequered flag.

But did I still enjoy the ride? Hell yes I did.

Four stars.
