There will not be a new season of reality series The Block NZ.
In November 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery ANZ postponed a new season of The Block NZ until 2024 due to Aotearoa's "challenging housing market".
That would have been the 11th season of the popular Three and ThreeNow show hosted by Mark Richardson.
However, it has now been cancelled indefinitely, as part of the wide-ranging restructure of Warner Bros. Discovery ANZ which also saw Newshub axed along with hundreds of jobs.
Warner Bros. International Television Production NZ co-manager Mike Molloy told The NZ Herald it was a blow to the industry.
"Devastating for a lot of local production workers. That is what we’re living with," said Molloy.
"I'm not going to comment around the show, or the decisions taken since we have the same ultimate parents. Suffice to say we've got to live by what's happened.
"There are some very, very disappointed people out there, particularly some young people who are struggling day to day."
A Warner Bros. Discovery spokesperson told Newshub: "When we announced our business restructure earlier this year, we indicated that WBD would no longer make fully funded local shows, which includes The Block NZ.
"Existing sponsors had been told that we would contact them if the show was going ahead, and they would have first right of renewal."
It is believed the new season would have been set on Auckland's North Shore in Brown's Bay where a section of houses had already been bought and were in the final stages of being built.
The Herald reported the former property on the site sold for $2.575 million in March 2022.
The 2022 season of The Block: Redemption, which saw former contestants return in teams, gave the show its lowest return on investment ever.
Winners Chloe Hes and Ben Speedy managed to sell their house in Orewa in Auckland for $4000 over the reserve price of $1,141,000, making it the lowest profit win in the show's 10 year history.
