Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is now the richest man in modern history.
According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his net worth broke US$150 billion (NZ$221 billion) in New York on Monday morning.
This makes Mr Bezos richer than anyone else on the plannt since at least 1982, when Forbes published its inaugural wealth ranking.
Mr Bezos, 54, has exceeded the net worth of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the world's second-richest person, by about US$55 billion (NZ$80.5 billion).
Mr Gates would have had a net worth greater than that of Mr Bezos if he'd held onto assets that he's since given away, largely to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Forbes excludes charitable sharing from its individual net worth calculations.
Mr Bezos first appeared on the Forbes 400 list of America's richest people in 1998, with a net worth of US$1.6 billion (NZ$2.3 billion).
