Every year there are new 'must have' favourites for Halloween costumes. It seems that dressing up as Baby Spice from the Spice Girls no longer carries the same appeal as it did when I was a kid.
Among the perennial favourites - pirates, witches, princesses and vampires - in 2018 some of the hottest Halloween looks reflect popular movies, video games and TV shows.
Sputnik reports this year the hottest Halloween looks are from Fortnite, one of the most popular video games in the world right now.
Fortnite fever is running high in New Zealand; Google searches for 'Fortnite Costume' have spiked over the past month. Searches for Fortnite costumes are even beating other 2018 movie character and superhero favourites Deadpool, Pennywise the Clown, Spiderman and Wonder Woman.
Tyler Staunton from Costume World NZ says he's had hundreds of requests for Fortnite costumes in the lead up to Halloween.
"Sadly, we don't have them in stock just yet, but we'll be launching them before Christmas. We'll be one of the only places in the country where people will be able to buy them from," he says.
"We'll be getting several characters to begin with and rolling them out gradually, we're expecting them to be really popular."
Also making the list for 2018 are Stranger Things (get your Barb costumes ready) and Mario Bros.
But if you do want to go down the nostalgic route, then Hocus Pocus-inspired costume ideas are also spiking in terms of views, just in time for the movie's 25th anniversary.
