In the latest episode of Grand Designs NZ, Ric and Boio turned a tree house childhood dream into a reality.
The couple faced a number of struggles, as building in a pine forest where trees frequently blow over in winter storms complicated construction.
Ric said his plan was to build "a tree house... something a little bit quirky, a little bit unusual".
He said he'd been playing in tree houses since he was a kid.
The construction took longer than expected and went "significantly, painfully over-budget", said Ric.
But the final result is spectacular.
Grand Designs NZ host Chris Moller was full of praise for the innovative build.
"The way the living room expands into the light is beautiful," he said inside the completed home.
"I'm immediately struck by the airy feel of Ric and Boio's octagonal room. Just like being up in a tree, you get a feeling of space all around you."
