Sister steals limelight by getting engaged at identical twin's wedding

A UK woman has given up the limelight at her own wedding day for her sister, letting her twin's partner drop to one knee and propose.

Jacqueline, 34, from Brough, Yorkshire, had walked down the aisle and exchanged vows with husband Phil shortly before her sister's boyfriend Chris popped the question to Gemma.

  • While most brides would be upset over being upstaged, thankfully Jacqueline had actually helped to concoct the plan with her future brother-in-law.

While having a couple's photo shortly after the ceremony, gobsmacked Gemma at first didn't realise her partner was proposing and couldn't believe what he'd done.

Delighted, she told Caters she exclaimed "yes!" but later feared her sister could be annoyed that she stole the limelight.

Gemma, a housing team manager, said, "We got on the bridge and were just having a photo, or so I thought, and kept trying to talk to me".

"It was annoying me, because I just wanted to get the photo over, so I told him 'not now'. When he dropped to one knee I felt really bad."

She said that when she realised what was happening, she was in shock.

"Once it calmed down I spoke to Jackie to see if she was okay about it, and then I found out they were all in on it.

"My sister is a good liar - the whole family were in on it too. I couldn't believe every guest knew [but] not me."

While Jacqueline says she was delighted to be sharing the celebrations for her wedding day last year with her twin, others were shocked to hear she was in on the plan.

"Some people found it odd and couldn't believe I would let Chris propose on my wedding day, and thought it would ruin it, but for me I thought it was brilliant," she said.

"It is a little strange but we are ridiculously close... we do and have done everything together.

"She knows things I'm thinking before I have to tell her - it's odd, at school it was a nightmare [and] we would swap places all the time.

"Our dad didn't know who was who half of the time, so it was a lot of fun growing up."
