Woman unaware she's pregnant discovers baby's head with phone camera while giving birth in the bath

A UK mother who didn't know she was pregnant says she was shocked to discover she was giving birth when she spotted the newborn's crowning head while in the bath.

Charlotte Dubard told Metro she used her phone camera to try and clarify the source of her severe abdominal pain, only to see her baby's hair "sprouting out downstairs".

The 24-year-old, who remained a size 8-10 throughout her surprise pregnancy, says she allowed instinct to take her over as she gave birth, before cutting the umbilical cord with a pair of bathroom scissors.

Baby Elias was born at a healthy 6lbs 8oz (3.08 kgs) in January. Dubard underwent the experience alone, without the aid of painkillers.

She says she called her 28-year-old boyfriend Miguel, who rushed back from his job at café chain Pret-a-Manger to their shared East London flat.

"When Miguel came home, he screamed 'Oh my God you found a baby in the street!'," Dubard recounted.

"I started bawling and said, 'this is ours'."

She says the pair, who met on dating app Happn three years ago, were "in shock".

"Neither of us could believe it was ours."

Dubard says she never suspected she was pregnant, continuing to drink, smoke and work 14 hour waitressing shifts throughout her pregnancy.

"It was the most mysterious thing, I obviously gained a little bit of weight but nowhere near enough to make me think I could be pregnant" she recalls.

"In hindsight, I was craving a lot of sugar!

"I call him my miracle baby because he is so healthy after all I put him through... Also, so many things could have gone wrong with me giving birth alone, but it all went remarkably smoothly."

The couple have started a fundraising page to help with their surprise arrival.
