Auckland's first axe-throwing range to open in July

If you're an Aucklander who likes hurling things at walls but finds darts a little too gentle, you're in luck.

On July 20 the CBD will get its very first commercial axe-throwing range. Having opened a successful Wellington branch last year, Sweet Axe Throwing is now bringing its unique athletic experience to the City of Sails.

It's a game fast becoming a competitive - and popular - sport, with the first axe-throwing facilities emerging around the world about a decade ago.

Founders Lloyd Bombell and Sarah Hilyard stumbled on the game in Sydney in 2015 and were addicted instantly. Their Wellington range has hosted parties, dates and team-building exercises, and now Aucklanders can get in on the fun at the new outlet on Nelson St.

Sweet Axe Throwing can accommodate groups ranging from eight to 50 players aged 16 and above. Guests score points by throwing 1.2kg axes at wooden targets aiming to hit the bullseye.

Staff insist anyone can throw an axe regardless of their strength, but to ensure everyone keeps safe all players undergo pre-game training with an "axepert".

Bombell says axe throwing might look intimidating, but it's "just another sport".

"It's just a back to basics, good fun game," he told Newshub in 2018. "Simplicity is key and once you throw that axe and hear that thunk, you're hooked."
