It's June 7, which means it's World Doughnut Day. A holiday you probably didn't even know existed but now you'll be so glad you did. Kiwis love doughnuts, and they've sure come a long way since those little deep fried and glazed rings sold outside shopping malls during our childhood.
As we're the first in the world to see the day, it makes sense we celebrate in style. Here are some of the best options from around the country that you dough-nut want to miss (sorry).
Krispy Kreme, Auckland
Seminal classic Krispy Kreme is probably the first place you think of when you think doughnuts. The great news is you no longer have to journey out to Manukau to get your fix - they have locations in Chancery Square and the airport Domestic terminal. Krispy Kreme is giving away 6000 free classic glazed doughnuts (the best flavour IMO) to mark today's momentous occasion - so get yourself to your closest location ASAP.
Little and Friday, Auckland and North Shore
The Newmarket and Belmont cafés have some of the best doughnuts in Auckland - with fillings that are always as delicious as they are kooky. If you're in the mood for something that reminds you of the small-town bakeries of your childhood go for a classic jam and cream filled doughnut, or branch out to a snickers or banoffee flavoured one for something a little different.
Dooornuts, Auckland
The K-road based US-style bakery is the place to go to get your sugar fix, especially if Friday is a little too much for you today. They're even on Uber Eats if you want to get them delivered to your workplace. But according to their Insta, these delicious doughnuts won't last long - you've been warned.
Mamas Donuts, Hamilton and Tauranga
First started by two mums in 2006, Mamas Donuts is Hamilton's best doughnut (or donut) gem. They're celebrating IDD in style, giving away 100 free doughnuts at both their Hamilton and Tauranga locations. We would recommend grabbing one of their delicious Cookies and Cream or their coconut dipped delights.
Original Foods, Christchurch
Even if you're down in Christchurch, you don't have to miss out on the doughnut based celebrations!! Christchurch classic Original Foods Bakery is giving away 1000 free doughnuts all day - or until they run out! Head down to their Wigram café and bakery to stock up. By the looks of their Instagram, the chocolate topped wheels of yumminess are going to go quick.
