Social media platform TikTok is a great place to learn tips, tricks and general life hacks to make things easier.
But one cleaning professional's video on why many of us have been cleaning our toilets wrong will have you rethinking the way you speed through one of the more unpleasant household tasks there is.
The owner of Australia's The Big Clean Co revealed that when disinfecting the toilet, there's an important step many of us are missing.
She says that disinfectant sprays like Dettol or Ajax, or even more natural options like Ecostore, need time to sit and do their thing, usually about 10 minutes.
In fact, many sprays state this on the label.
"So you think you're a clean freak? But here's a hard truth from a professional cleaner. Just because you're using a disinfectant spray does not mean you're disinfecting anything," she says in the video.
"You need to read the labels. These supermarket sprays need to be left on the surface for 10 whole minutes to kill any germs."
Yes, terrifyingly, simply spraying and wiping it down isn't doing the job.
The video has racked up over 600,000 views on TikTok with commenters shocked at the revelation.
"Oh my God, I'm so mad," wrote one person.
"Holy shit I'm shook," wrote another.
"Well this did amazing things for my anxiety," another joked.
It's not the first cleaning hack to go viral on social media. In 2019, a cleaning guru shared the clever way she deep cleans her carpets at home using a $5 window wiper, shocking the internet.
